Mona Dumoulin Cross is a representational pastelist and oil painter. Intrigued by the effects of light, Mona creates vibrant artwork inspired by nature. While she prefers to paint directly whenever possible, be it alla prima or plein air, Mona also uses photo references to capture more fleeting subjects like animals and flowers. With an emphasis on basic design elements including color harmony and value, Mona paints and teaches with an eye toward simplicity.
Having studied oil painting with Barbara Arsenault for over twenty years, Mona is largely self-taught in the medium of pastel. After being introduced to sanded paper and dark pastels at a workshop, she immediately fell in love with the spontaneity and intricate textures that soft pastels create. Her pastel animal portraits reflect her passion for and focus on the animal-human bond.
Mona is a juried associate member of the Pastel Society of America, the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, and an exhibiting Russell Gallery artist at the Plymouth Center for the Arts. She lives in Taunton, Massachusetts, with her husband Rick and their two, much-loved shelties, Cooper & Sasha.
